The beauty of Belarus is outstanding, and the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble do much to fly the flag for the region.

This fantastic site displays a grand host of the regional culture, where you can spend a couple of hours learning about the buildings former occupants.

Audio guides are available in English, and this gently leads you around the site.

The Park, even towards winter, is beautiful, and restorative for wellbeing. I cant wait to see this site in summer also!

It has been my 6th visit to this memorial for my life. Nothing has changed for all these years.

But it must be visited!!! Lots of Belarusian families do it from time to time and I could see some elderly couple telling their grandchildren the sad story of this village.

If you are a tourist, it will help you to understand why World War ll is remembered in each family.

Vera,

First of all there are so many options for what you can do there that it'll be very hard to leave anyone dissatisfied.

You can rent a bike (there are several tracks of different length) or you can just walk around (although the place is gigantic so it`s going to be hard to cover all of it). Basically it`s a large and ancient nature reservation which, aside from a beautiful old forest, has a nature museum, the residence of the Belarusian Ded Moroz (aka Santa Claus) and several species of animals in huge barriers (Bison or Zubr in Belarusian being the national animal and as such - the main attraction).

The museum shouldn't take you more than an hour to walk through but its set really nice. What we enjoyed the most is the Ded Moroz residence which is located 12 km into the reservation (there is a special bus going there and the price is included in the ticket). This is the place to point out that you buy a separate ticket for every attraction (museum, residence etc) but even if you take all of them it'll still be ok even for tourists on budget.

The Ded Moroz residence is a small, artificial, village built based on russian folklore tales (has wooden statues of different folk/fairytale figures and wooden huts). When you arrive there is a tour guide who takes you through the place and there are different activities. The place is great for kids and adults but not so much for the sceptic/grumpy one's among them. The main downside is that if you don't speak Russian you'll miss a large part of the experience (what will be left for you is suit to walk around and take pictures).

The animals - not many of them and if you have been in a large zoo - it'll probably be a bit boring but still it’s pretty nice.

Olga,

The castle makes for a very nice visit. Given that Belarus has so often been a battlefield, it is a wonder the place is still standing at all. During Soviet times the castle was used as a hospital but it has since been carefully and tastefully restored. The audio guide was ok. I visited in winter - which with the snow had its own charms - but I imagine that in summer the castle grounds are also worth spending time in. I combined my visit with a trip to Mir castle, some 20-30 minutes drive away.

Robin,
